20 SMART TIPS YOU NEED FOR YOUR CRUISE

So you’ve booked the cruise! You are going to love it. Here are some of my favorite tips for cruising that I wish someone had told me!

  1. Hide a foldable duffle bag in the bottom of your suitcase. When you hit the ports and start buying gifts, you are going to be glad you have it for your return trip home. There have been times we had to search around for a reasonable priced suitcase to bring our souvenirs home.
  2. Take a small travel power strip (preferably one that has a few USB slots also) so you can charge your phones, tablets, cameras etc. . https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D25RSWX/ref=cm_sw_r_oth_api_i_TYhnEbK8QNYM7
  3. Waterproof phone bag that floats. You can wear it around your neck but if it happens to fall in the water during one of your activities it will be safe and float. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075CGYP46/ref=cm_sw_r_oth_api_i_CWhnEbMR9RTG2
  4. Pack a large brightly colored T-shirt. Why you say? When you are at sea, no one tells you how windy it is on the deck! . My towel kept blowing off of my lounge chair when I would get up to go grab a snack or drink.. So I took my husband’s t-shirt and put it over the towel and the back of the chair. The t-shirt holds the towel down and it makes it easier to identify your chair with the other hundred chairs. I received many compliments on what a great idea that was. Now you could always take those towel clips but that is just one or two more things to keep up with. A large t-shirt make a great coverup too. So it’s a win!
  5. Don’t forget a refillable bottle. Come on, do your part to cut down on waste. This is great to have on the excursion days also. The juices are free in the dining room of the ship, so my kids like to fill up with juices before we take off for morning activities.
  6. Do the BEHIND THE SCENES KITCHEN TOUR! It is so amazing how many meals are prepared on the ship each day. They have crew working around the clock in preparation.
  7. An Over the Door hanging organizer for your toiletries and makeup is a Must. It saves a ton of space.
  8. Magnets-most ships have a lot of metal, like the walls and doors. So if you get the hook magnet you can hang your lanyards, sunglasses, goggles right by the door. Each day you will get a paper schedule of the daily activities so we like to put it up on the wall where we can all keep track of the fun events happening.
  9. Highlighter. Great for highlighting your schedule on the wall with the magnets.
  10. Packing Cubes. They are a lifesaver for me and my family. You can squeeze in a lot. You can line the bottom of your closet with the cubes. Tip for kids. I pack my kids stuff in ziplock type bags (that we reuse over and over). They are labeled Day 1, Day 2 ….So each morning I can grab the say DAY 3 bag. It has their outfit for the day, undies and socks. I also have a bathing suit bag that has swimsuit, googles and sunscreen. Also you can ask your steward to bring you extra hangers if you want to hang your formal outfits up. Did you know you can put your suitcases under the bed? This is a great space saver.
  11. Sunscreen! Don’t wait to buy that stuff on the ship or at the island. You will pay out the Wazzu! Many destinations are not allowing you to bring regular sunscreen to their locations because it is destroying the Coral Reefs, wildlife etc. So be sure to buy the kind that is Reef Safe.https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Y9TT1K8/ref=cm_sw_r_oth_api_i_U0hnEbMVSCKX7
  12. Carry a lightweight drawstring back pack. It’s perfect for lugging around sunscreen, water bottles, books etc. This will just help keep your hands free. But I wouldn’t put anything important or valuable in there. They can be easily snatched if the wrong person wanted to take it.
  13. Don’t worry about packing beach towels. The ship will have towels around the pool and by the exit door when you are leaving the ship to the ports. Just keep up with them. They will charge you if you don’t turn them back in.
  14. Before you leave for your trip, buy some blow up floats at the dollar store. When you arrive at your island stop, there will be a tremendously long line to RENT these. Keep in mind, You will just need to blow it up so don’t get a huge one. Then you can deflate it before getting back on the ship or you can throw it away if you had a $1 worth of fun with it and want to be done.
  15. Costco and Amazon have those snorkeling masks that you can rent to go snorkel. It may be worth it to you in investing in one before the trip if you see yourself cruising more. I wasn’t sure I wanted to put my head in something other people have been breathing, spitting and sweating in all day before me. There is a long line to get these also when you arrive at your island stops with swimming.
  16. Tour packages…..This is a tough one. Do you buy the ships tour package or book one on your own? If you aren’t an experienced traveler I would stay with the ships tour package. It’s just safer. The best ones fill up fast so if there is something you are dying to do, book now. If not, wait. Sometimes if they don’t fill up they will offer discounts. If you are experienced traveler, and you will know how to book tours on your own, do the research on good tour groups in area. Make sure the tour group knows (before you leave on the tour) what time you have to be back at the ship. Pad this time. If you are late, the ship will not wait for you. It will leave you and take all your stuff still on the ship with them! . One trip we bought the ships tour, not for the tour but to get to our desired location without wasting all of our time. When we cruised to Santorini, we had a very limited amount of time there. If we took the ships tour bus, it drove us all the way up the mountain. If we didn’t we had to WALK it. It was going to take a good amount of time. By the time we would walk it, it would be time to leave! So we bought the tour-just for the bus ride. When we arrived the top, we then left the tour, and ran ahead on our own so we could get pictures before the CROWD from all the ships arrived. We also found a nice bar with a view so we had a seat for the sunset. We saw much more on our own than if we had stayed with the group. As I mentioned before, we have done a lot of traveling so we have well researched the areas that we go, how to get around and stay mindful of the time and our safety.
  17. If you are going to a port that has a View like the Sunset in Santorini, research some restaurants before your trip and make a reservation! Depending on the destination, (like Santorini) you may need to make the reservation months in advance.
  18. If you need internet just buy ONE cell package for one phone. It’s usually a sign in type of internet access so my husband uses it. Signs in and out. Then I use it on my phone sign in and out with his password. We don’t mind taking turns and sharing. From the moment you get on the ship to the time you get back to port make sure your phone is in AIRPLANE mode or you will Pay.
  19. Dinners on the ship. Did you know in the main dining room you can order more than one entree? Also, since there are so many nationalities who work on the ship, many times you can access Indian dishes, Thai food, etc. I also just learned that you can have continental breakfast delivered to your room for FREE! (BUT DON’T FORGET TO TIP)
  20. Check the wine policy but on some cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, you are allowed to carry on 2 bottles of wine on per room. But don’t forget your bottle opener. The cruise will charge you a corking fee if they have to open it for you. (check your ships policy before you go.)

Now go pack your bags and have a Great cruise! Bon Voyage!

PEACHES- The Life of the Party

She’s the new girl in Charlotte that everyone is talking about. She’s a beauty, the life of the party and everyone wants to have their picture taken with her. “Peaches” is her name. If you are planning a wedding, holiday party, or any sort of celebration, you are going to want to make sure she is on your invite list.

Blog Post written by Belinda Joy Joysonajourney.com

The minute I saw her I fell in love. She had that “TROUVAILLE” (something lovely found by chance) feel that we JOYs are always in search of on our travel adventures. But this time we didn’t have to travel, she came to us. All the way from Italy, Peaches is a vintage style Italian Piaggio Ape mini 3 wheeled truck. Her Franchise owners, T.J. and Coleen Bridges of Fort Mill, SC, (owners of Bubble & Brews Charlotte), thought this unique bar is just what the area needed. So they got in touch with Get Cozy Mobile Bars, secured the territory and had one made. Peaches, with her full-service mobile bar can hold seven different types of drinks of your choice. Her favorites are (but not limited to) some of the great craft- brewed beer options from around the Charlotte area and of course, Prosecco. Because who doesn’t love bubbles? Whatever your drink of choice, it will be loaded and pumped through the aerated taps. This provides great taste and cuts down on the waste that is usually left after a party.- No left over bottles and cans to clean up! (Some areas of South Carolina won’t recycle glass which is disappointing). Peaches is even GREEN and good for the environment! Less Waste Better Taste! I told you she’s amazing.

If you are planning a wedding or another special celebration, Peaches will leave everyone talking about your great event. Dates are filling up fast for the Holidays. To find out more about Peaches and how you can make her customizable with special signage and decor, contact thomas@getcozybars.com, http://www. getcozybars.com or call 336-253-2542. Be sure to follow her @bubblesandbrewsclt on Instagram. She can travel to locations between North Carolina, South Carolina & Georgia.

Bubbles & Brews Clt and Get Cozy did not pay me to write this blog. I recently saw a post about Peaches on Instagram. She was just so cute I wanted to share her story. I am hoping to host a GIVEAWAY with them in the future so keep an eye out for that- coming soon on Instagram.

Thank you for joining me on this journey right here in my own backyard. Please comment and let us know if you have seen Peaches at a party. We’d love to hear all the places she has been celebrating . Also, before you leave, please subscribe. The more subscribers I get the more fun stories like this I get to cover.

Until next time,

BIG TEX

Everything is So Big in Texas Ya’ll! We had such a good time exploring around Dallas. Big Tex greeted us at the entrance of the Texas State Fair.

Let me just say if these pictures had smellovison your mouth would be watering! The minute you open the door to this place the aromas are so enticing you just want to sit down with a stranger and eat their food!! The Noodle gods were on our side because right after we arrived and put our name on the list-they put a sign on the front door saying SOLD OUT! They were not seating anymore customers. We were so Thankful we arrived just in time. Recently, Bon Appetite just selected them as one of top new restaurants. Actually, they were named the #2 best new restaurant in the country. I now understand why. We even got to meet Chef Danny Sirisavath who was kind enough to let us take a picture and explain some of his amazing dishes. If you are ever traveling to Dallas be sure to add this one to your list!!

TROUVAILLE Moment (something lovely happened by chance) from our adventure in Dallas….We heard Eric Clapton was staying in our hotel!! The Four Seasons Hotel Las Colinas. So that got us thinking…he must be playing there! 2 nights to be exact with a long list of other guitar greats like: Bonnie Raitt, Peter Frampton, Sheryl Crow, Jeff Beck, Billy Gibbons, Citizen Pope, Jimmie Vaughn, James Burton and many more. I never in a million years expected that kind of concert was in my future! Saj got to sport his boots! Great night of unexpected great music!

So you can’t go to Texas and not have the BBQ Brisket. We decided to try Hard Eight BBQ. What a delicious FEAST it was! You pick all the meat you want and they weigh it and pay by the pound. That’s $60 worth of good ole meat!

The Feast!

If you are going to be in the Dallas area, The Dallas State Fair is going on from September 27-Oct 20, 2019. And that’s a Wrap! Thanks for joining us on our journey in Texas. I did take a little day trip over to Waco to visit Magnolia Market. Be sure to Hop on over to read about the excitement I had there.

-Joys on a Journey

Magnolia Market just a Jaunt away from Dallas

I made it! Magnolia Market!!

“There is gold in Every piece of your story.” Found in Magnolia Market

Jaunt- a short excursion or journey for pleasure.

When I found out that we were heading to Dallas for a meeting, I immediately started calculating how far Dallas was from Waco. I’ve always wanted to go to Magnolia Market. To my excitement it was only 1.5 hr drive away. So when we arrived to Dallas I headed out to Waco the next morning. I’ve heard the stories of how big the crowds and the lines can be. But I arrived around 11:30am on a Thursday and I walked right in. A Magnolia staffer greeted me at the door and complimented me on my dress. I know it sounds silly for me to mention that part but that fact that anyone connected to Magnolia liked something of Mine was a big compliment! As I imagined, everything had been thought out down to every little beautiful detail. I wanted one of everything but clearly that wasn’t going to fit in my suitcase. So I settled for a Magnolia Silos T-shirt and a few little Knick Knacks.

Even these words are beautiful.
Everything in Perfect order.
Demo Day Section
Chip has his own section.

After I had drooled over ever inch of the inside I decided to head outside. Imagine the most beautiful lush green lawn to sit and have a picnic or a place for the kids to run and play. In the background you can view the famous Silos. Lining the sidewalks were plenty of food trucks for many different tastes, including one from Magnolia Table! So if you don’t want to go wait in the line for the restaurant, you could have a little sample of what is served there. I made my way around and found the Magnolia Seed and Supply. A little garden area with a cute little mushroom table and chairs, covered swings, and flowers of all colors every color and shape.

Magnolia Table Food Truck

As the Waco Sun was starting to heat up, I decided to retreat to the Silos Baking Company. The refreshing air conditioning greeted me as did the smell of fresh baked cookies. The the line short. So my timing was perfect. I had to try Silos Cookie and the Lemon Lavender cupcake. Both were DEVINE! Unfortunately, I ate them so fast I forgot to take a picture. So you MUST head there to try one for yourself!

I had a great visit checking out everything Magnolia. If I ever go again, I would want to stay at one homes Chip and Joanna remodeled. Many of the new owners are now offering them Airbnb’s. There is a lot of Gold in Chip and Joanna’s story. It’s All over Waco. I think they turned Waco Gold.

Wait! Just Announced This Morning, Chip and Joanna are opening a HOTEL!!!! So next time I go I will have to check that out! More Gold in Waco.

TIPS AND TRICKS:

  • Go during the week. The crowds are not as crazy.
  • Go early! The bakery opens at 7:30am
  • Getting around:there is ON street parking and a Free Trolly to take you around.
  • Take a hat and Plenty of water. It’s HOT!🔥
  • Check Airbnb for a possible Fixer Upper home to stay overnight in.
  • The Magnolia Hotel is coming!
  • Be sure to check out some other cool shops while in Waco- The Foundry, Junky Monkey (really cool if you are into digging for treasures) and Spice Village (90 different vendors) were some of my favorites.
  • Hours change closer to Thanksgiving and the Holidays so be sure to check before making a trip there.
  • How to get there…head to Waco. Take Exit 335A. Turn on 4th street. Left on Webster.
  • Get lost and you may find your something lovely found by chance-Trouvaille!

Kilimanjaro – a trek not a sprint

That moment when finally at the top!

by Saj Joy

Since Saj was the only Joy who made this journey, he is taking over the blog to share his amazing account of four friends taking on this challenge. It’s one to remember….

This wasn’t a bucket list goal, nor a challenge from someone else. Quite honestly, it was a blend of realizing that before I turn 50 (yeah crazy – cause I act as if I’m 20 something), I wanted to do more than having a celebration for a milestone met – rather letting the trouvaille spirit guide me … and it took me to Africa. I’m not a mountain climber, trekker, and quite honestly not in the best shape of my life – but this was to prove to myself, that by putting my mind into something (commitment), working on it (training) and believing (faith) – then it can be done. Oh, did I tell you that I convinced my 3 closest college friends (2 who will also reach the milestone age this year) to take this challenge on with me… they would probably use the word, coerce, but none the less – now the challenge was not an individual one but that of our team – WE would need to commit, train, believe and push each other, for success would be if WE made it to the top.

I’m going to get to the end of the story – the part after we get to Africa. But, quite honestly, though it may have been boring and too drawn out for the blog, your work/effort training truly determines the outcome – and we worked hard, pushed each other and held each other accountable.

The people of Tanzania were delightful – yes, we spent most of our city time in Moshi (one day before the hike) and Arusha (one day before we left the country), but each Tanzanian’s pleasant smile, desire to work, persistence to sell arts/crafts (need to make a living), was truly survival! It was interesting to see a Mosque, Hindu Temple and Churches along one stretch of road… I did not expect that! However, I never felt unsafe, not like other countries where there may be radicalism and fear of kidnapping, or worse. Here, it was as with most developing countries, you may get pick pocketed and harassed because you walked away from a great deal but in fairness, we 4 buddies stayed together and didn’t put ourself in risky situations.

The first morning, we also met Joseph, our lead guide, though diminutive in stature was all muscle & agile like a gazelle. The survey of our hiking gear passed the check – whew – (except the need for gaiters) that we rented the following morning on our way out of town. In addition to our physical conditioning we’d been doing for months, our equipment & supplies were sufficient to begin the hike!

The excitement was palpable as the training we had done was now being put to the test – we needed to execute. The goal was to get our team to the top – if we were to be successful, it would require avoiding altitude sickness – at altitudes we’ve not tested? The closest I’ve been was Breckenridge, CO at ~12,000 feet and Quito, Ecuador (~13,000) and both for very limited periods of time. Our marathon to get to the summit was more like the Rock-n-Roll marathon – goal is enjoy the bands along the run – ours was to enjoy the varying landscapes (5 zones) along the 6 day journey to the Summit. From the farmland to the rainforests at 7,000 feet elevation to Moorlands, Alpine Desert, and Uhuru Peak at 19,341 feet!

One of the first appreciations was getting up the 3rd night to go the bathroom and noticing that we were “above the clouds”! I’ve only seen that when flying in a jet but here we were, camping above the clouds. And for the next 3 days, the goal was ahead and above us while the clouds separated us from the world below. Seeing the moonrise and sunset in one panoramic view in that setting – unbelievable.

We were above the clouds for several days . In this shot you can see the Moon and the Sunrise.

One of the greatest challenges was also in knowing that each step higher in elevation meant lower oxygen concentration. You know a lower supply of the thing your body needs to stay alive. The 2nd night, we checked our oxygen saturation at (10,000 feet) ranging from 80s-low 90s). Just to make sure it wasn’t an erroneous reading, Joseph checked his oxygenation that revealed 99% – and he’s jumping around like what’s the issue? Understand that a low oxygen saturation impacts your cells ability to function normally and at some point cellular death. So, you can imagine my nervousness when we reached Lava Rock at 15,000 feet and my oxygenation was at 78%! The rest of the my team was also in that similar oxygenation level. Though we descended to a lower altitude to camp that night, the fear that WE may not reach the summit became a reality!

I also have a medical condition – sleep apnea. For those of you who don’t know, with this condition, one tends to stop breathing intermittently during sleep, leading to restless sleep and waking up because – yup, you guessed it – low oxygen levels! The solution is using a CPAP machine when you sleep – it delivers the necessary pressures to keep your airway open. So, you’re not taking supplemental oxygen, just allowing your lungs to stay open to breath the available oxygen in your surroundings. In anticipation of this challenge, I had the tour company get permission months in advance of the trip from the Tanzanian park system. I paid extra to have a “Noise Less” Generator & Fuel to be used to recharge the battery for my CPAP. Problem solved! It couldn’t be that simple right – my CPAP battery malfunctioned such that it would not store the charge – providing only a few hours of effective battery life to operate the CPAP. Oh, the “noise less” generator was both 50+ lbs that Machame (one of our porters had to carry) and it was quite LOUD. I would charge the CPAP battery delivering ~3 hours worth of power and stay awake the rest of the night! After three nights of this routine, at higher altitudes (with lower oxygen levels), I was getting really nervous. The 3rd night, our fuel for the generator ran out and Machame had to hike for hours to pick up additional fuel. Machame is not technically adept with small engine repair, and neither is anyone in our travel company, so when the generator engine flooded and pull cord spring locked up, we were fortunate to have Ravi help lead the solutions. Finally, on the 4th night, had to leave the generator running most of the night in order to get some reasonable sleep and prepare for the final ascend! The consequence – other campers complained of the noise from the generator keeping them from resting! So, our solution was to find the furthest spot at the summit base camp – so we could run the generator for a few hours without disturbing the others!

The guys trying to work on the generator without much success.

The summit – we get up before midnight to get on the layers of gear – but being the furthest away, when we start the summit climb, it takes us an hour just to get through our camp to the higher base camp. Then another hour to get past the 2nd base camp – I think, I’m only guessing because I stopped looking at the time and the altitude on my watch/altimeter. Along the way, I was tested by a headache (was this cerebral edema), some nausea and localized chest pain (was this pulmonary edema) because if it was, then trip was done and I’d be turning back… How did I know for sure that it wasn’t altitude sickness – I’d never been above 15,000 feet before! I hadn’t been sleeping, hadn’t been eating well, had other campers upset at me, had been hiking for days – may be it just wasn’t meant to be? This is where Joseph, our lead guide, was amazingly calm and had been studying each of us to this point. We were in constant communication with him regarding any symptoms and would try different remedies (ginger tea for nausea, candy bar/snack for energy, acetaminophen or ibuprofen for the headache, etc.). Each of the symptoms subsided and we pushed on! It was “supposed to” take 6-7 hours to reach the summit, but remember the marathon I mentioned previously, we weren’t going to start sprinting now! We caught the sunrise, but still on the ascent – not the summit. We started seeing hikers descending while we still hadn’t reached (Stella point at 18,885 feet). The encouragement we received from these hikers was greatly appreciated – they had reached their pinnacle but wanted us to do so as well! We took a picture at (Stella point) at ~8:30 (I think), not sure we had the will or energy to finish the remaining 1 hour hike (only 100 meters of elevation) to Uhuru peak. The group looked at each other, we didn’t come this far to stop here! Onward! The rest is Now, history.

If you look closely, you can see our guide, leader and angel there on his knees praying and Thanking God for a safe climb.
That moment when finally at the top!
We made it-Together! Here’s to Good Friends!

PETRA, JORDAN THE RED ROSE CITY

The Treasury

Our Holy Land Trip took us from Israel to Jordan. Crossing the border was quite an undertaking. We had to depart from the Israeli bus to go through border security. It was no laughing matter. They do not play around and one wrong move and you are not allowed to proceed. Once admitted to the Jordanian side, we had to board a completely different bus and get a new tour guide. Both Jordanian. We don’t always like being a part of a tour group. But for this trip, I believe this made the tour crossing much easier than on our own. The tour guides knew the ropes and we followed.

After eating a lot of the SAME kinds of food for most of our trip, we were starting to get a little burned out on Fresh pita, Hummus, olives, grape leaves, Kabobs and rice. Can you believe I’m even saying that?! But it was true. We were just hoping for something a little different at this point. So it was a great surprise when we arrived at our Beautiful Marriott Petra! It had THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VIEWS! Our dinner was not a buffet but a traditional Bedouin feast with entertainment.

Sunset view from our dinner spot at the Marriott Petra.
The food is cooked traditionally in a fire in the ground. The flavors were amazing.
So Good!
Such a neat evening.
Our entertainment….
I love this shot that Saj captured with the night sky and the musician playing in the moonlight.

It was one of the most memorable experiences I think we have ever had on a trip!

THE ROSE RED CITY-TREASURY

The beautiful sandstone.

The next morning, we headed out to the see the Treasury. One of new Seven Wonders of the World. There are no words to describe it and the pictures really don’t do it justice. It is entirely carved out of the surrounding red Sandstone. Though it wasn’t discovered until the 19th century, it was built back during the time of Jesus. It is a massive and impressive sight. Especially when you imagine the era it was carved and how hard it would have been to create during that age. It has over 800 carved tombs. The Treasury and The Sanctuary are the most famous highlights there. But if you want to see it all, you’d better add it to your list soon. Do you remember seeing the Treasury in the Indiana Jones, Last Crusade movie?

Ok, so not everything is ALL ROSY here…….though it is a breathtaking sight unfortunately, the treatment of the children and animals working here were not the best. Before we arrived my kids were all excited to ride a camel. When I saw the conditions I just could not do it. I still let them because this was a highlight they had been talking about before the trip but it was hard to stomach. I decided I would be the photographer and follow along so I could capture the ride for them. Well let’s just say Camels are FAST!! I about had a heat stroke running through the desert trying to catch up with them! So they got their picture and their memory on the camel but I do hope they never ask to do that again. Lastly, when there are camels there are flies. A LOT OF THEM!!!

The Picture of the boys
Of course we had to get that family shot!

*Travel Tips:

*Go with a tour group if you can. It makes the process of crossing the border way easier!

*Stay at the Marriott Petra…..they are not paying me to say this. Just my honest opinion. Just do it! You won’t regret it!

*Arrive Early if you want that Great shot! It gets crowded and it’s hard to capture that shot in front of the Treasury without others in it!

*Take Lots of Water!

*Prepare for flies! Yuck!

SWEET SUMMERTIME IN WINSTON-SALEM

My 2 Joy Boys…..Double Jolt of Joy.

My Double Jolt of Joy took me on a SWEET Artful tour around Winston-Salem. First Stop was a Southerners dream come true. Sweet Potatoes. When you walk in, you are hit with some of the greatest smells of home cooked food that draws you in drooling for more. Picture this….Sweet Potato biscuits with Ham, bacon and brie. Now that’s not your typical Southern mix but Man was it delightful!! Next we dove into some fried green tomatoes and Okra. YUM! Nothing better to wash it down with than some Good Ole Sweet Tea.

Next stop, Black Mountain Chocolate Factory for some CHEER WINE CHOCOLATES. It’s a small little factory but they had plenty to sample and satisfy your sweet tooth. It smells of warm hot chocolate.

So this is where it all started….The Original Krispy Kreme. It just so happened that it was KK’s Birthday. We couldn’t pass off the chance to Celebrate. If you aren’t from this area and if you possibly missed what a Krispy Kreme doughnut taste like….You haven’t LIVED! It’s not Cake like Dunkin Donuts. It’s just melt in your mouth SWEET goodness. Talk about Sugar High!

The Original Krispy Kreme.

After a nice long stroll in the North Carolina Summer heat, we decided to stop off at The Mast General Store for an ice cold Butter Beer. Mast General Store. The Original Mast is a unique Old Fashion General Store (in Valle Crucis) that back in the day was known for having everything from Candles to Caskets. I don’t believe they still offer caskets but you can find about anything else. The candy section is a kids favorite. Barrel after Barrel of every candy you can imagine. Watch out. It adds up fast. But a great memory of mine growing up and one I am now sharing with my own children.

Next Stop, DADA. Downtown Arts District. We love murals so we love to search out the local mural scene when we visit a new place. Winston is full of them. There is a fun little path you can follow. We had a lot of fun checking it out.

The last stop was Dewey’s Bakery. This was one of my childhood favorites. They have the best Moravian Sugar cake and Moravian Spice cookies. If you haven’t ever tried these, you must add them to your list. We did not go to Old Salem on this trip but if you are planning a trip to Winston-Salem you should plan a visit Old Salem. Especially during the Holidays. The decorations are just beautiful.

DUKE BRINGS EXCITEMENT TO CHARLOTTE

img_5741Growing up in North Carolina, we were raised on ACC basketball and everything would stop when the tournament came on. The excitement would build as everyone would sport their school colors and the rivalries would begin. When I say everything stopped…. Even school. During ACC tournament days the teachers would roll the black AV cart with the tv and our treat would be not an afternoon of learning about History, but watching history unfold on the basketball court. Most of my friends (or enemies during basketball season) would pull the for UNC Tar Heels or NC State Wolfpack. My fascination was with the Duke  Blue Devils. To me, Coach K was a Hero! He knew how to make a bunch of guys turn things into a miracle winning Shot with only seconds left on the clock. These were the players, Dawkins, Bilas,  Allery, Amaker, Henderson and Snyder. They were one of Coach K’s first of amazing teams and unlike today, they stuck around all 4 years.  This great team would leave me gasping for breath but exhillerated all at the same time. One ACC championship game in 1986 inspired me so much that I wrote them a cheesy poem. (Cheesy, you can check it out below) I was so proud of my work that I sent it to Duke’s Coach, Mike Krzyzewski never expecting to hear anything back. But one afternoon, I was sitting in science class and someone came from the school office with a big white envelope for me. On the front of the envelope in big blue letters….Department of Duke Universtity Basketball. What?! I will never forget the moment I opened it and found a signed team pic from Coach K thanking me for my beautiful poem! To say, on top of the world was an understatement. I suspect my Dad was just as excited for me because he couldn’t wait for me to get out of school. He went straight up to the school to deliver it to me. img_5929This started my fascination with Duke and Coach K.  I could go on and on with stories of my continued encounters with my favorite players, like when Johnny Dawkins stopped to look at my whole Duke Scrapbook I toted to him to sign one day and how Jay Bilas came into the stands at an All Star game to give me a hat he signed and maybe he influenced me to be a communication major like he was…  Fast forward 33 years….

The ACC tournament was back in NC and in the same city where I live. Many of my friends couldn’t believe I wasn’t going to a game. Our schedule has been crazy. I really was just planning on watching the games from home. But on the morning of the Championship game, which Duke was going to be in, my husband woke me up and said we are going to that game tonight. I hadn’t even thought about it. What? Really? It was almost if I was that 7th grader again in science class. I was so excited! I was also going to experience it with my now 7th and 8th grade boys. It was a really cool experience! Thanks to some super sweet friends with Duke connections, they were able to find us some extra tickets which happened to be where the Duke player’s  parents were sitting…(like the Admiral, David Robinson!) When the game was over we were right in the action. We got to watch the confetti fall, the players cut the net, and receive the trophy. Extra special for me, Jay Bilas, one of the ESPN analyst, presented the championship trophy to Coach K. When Coach received the award, he mentioned how Jay Bilas, Dawkins, Allery and Amaker (team from 1986) was the team that began his road to winning and championships. My heart just swelled in emotion. I was that 7th grade little girl again. My eyes teared up for I don’t know how many more years we’ll see Coach K at these championships.  But I know I was witnessing more History. It was a night I will always remember. I’m so Thankful my husband decided we should go to the game and that we were able to get tickets. Not just tickets but it an awesome spot for an Old Duke Fan.  A Trouvaille moment! img_5914

img_5765img_5755For those of you that hate basketball and even Duke, you have probably already stopped reading this. But substitute Duke for your childhood star, player, team or hero. You probably can remember that excitement. Take yourself back in time…..oh to be a kid again. Thanks for joining me while going down memory lane.

Winter Wonderland: Breckenridge and Denver

img_4954
Sapphire Point (near Breck) had an amazing view you won’t want to miss. Even at 4 degrees!

img_4826Heaven is a little closer in the mountains! Golden Horseshoe Sleigh Rides so magical.

Our first journey of 2019 took us on an adventure to Colorado. We haven’t been to Breckenridge before so we decided it was time to check it out. It did not disappoint. Talk about a cute little mountain town….lots of character, good food, great skiing, and all the winter wonderland outings you can pack in. Being from North Carolina, we get an inch of snow and the whole city shuts down. But it’s usually just a lot of ice and not a lot of Snow or fun. This was REAL snow with all kinds of fun adventures to enjoy in it. Sleigh Rides, Snowshoeing, shopping, eating and of course, Skiing.

Our first stop was Denver. Talk about a Rocky Mountain High! Denver has that Big City feel with a lot of ART and Culture mixed in. First stop…..UNION STATION. If you are coming in from the airport you can hop on light rail that will take you into town and drop you at the real train stop in Union Station. You should make a stop here even if you aren’t taking the train in from the airport. It was recently renovated in 2017 to resemble the train stations of old. Very elegant with an Art Deco feel. We dropped by the Mercantile and watched as some of the days pasta special was being made. If only we could have stayed long enough to sample it. Its a neat little hub of action for Breakfast and Happy Hour. Be sure to check it out if you are there.

Next we ventured out for some of the Best Sushi ever–at Uchi. Uchi Link If you are a sushi lover you need to add this to your list. Talk about melt in your mouth. My husband and son shared the Chef’s 10 course tasting. The oooed and aaahhhhed over every course. Each piece was a piece of art. My other son tried the Wagyu beef hot rock. It was such a fun experience of cooking these tender slices of melt in your mouth steak on these sizzling hot rocks. As repeated many times….the sauce which accompanied it was to Die For! Our taste buds will never be the same.

As we made our way from Denver to Breckenridge. There was quite a bit of traffic. Everyone trying to get to the same areas with limited roads to carry everyone to their resort destination. So put on your package of patience. Though we got a great deal on a rental car we didn’t know until we got the the rental car dealership that if you are going to be driving to this area you have to have an SUV or chains on your car or there is like a $1000 fine. So we had to upgrade our rental. No choice. No longer a Great deal. It added another $200 to our total rental price. So be aware of this when booking your rental car. I will remind you later,  in my tips and tricks.

Now to the Winter Wonderland part…….skiing is not one of my favorite things. I don’t enjoy it but the rest of my crowd does. Since they were going to be skiing the next few days,  I scheduled something for us to do as a family when we arrived. Golden Horseshoe Sleigh rides set us up for a beautiful afternoon adventure. When we arrived we were able to meet our strong, stoic, almost royal looking black horse, Ashley. She took us on a ride through the forest as the snow glistened on the trees, the sleigh bells rang and the crisp air chilled our cheeks. It was like something from a dream. They furnished us with blankets and hot cocoa. It was all very cozy and romantic. As we rode we just took in the stillness of the forest and the breathtaking moment. It was for sure the highlight of our trip. After riding a bit, we were able to stop for the kids to take pictures and to make snow angels –something we don’t get to do in the snow back in NC. We also got to meet some of Ashley’s friends, Smith and Wesson, Salt and pepper and Mary Kate, Ashley’s sister. They were all handsome horses and they looked very happy and well cared for. Thanks for Golden Horseshoe Sleighrides for providing us with such a sweet memory. Check below in our tips and tricks for Golden Horseshoe Sleighrides location and info so you can check it out when you go. http://coloradosleighrides.com

Finally, the boys got what they were waiting for Skiing! Over 12,000 feet! img_5026

While the boys took on their skiing challenge I wandered around Main street in Breckenridge. They have cute little shops for souvenirs. I stopped off at the Crepe Al La Cart for one of their famous crepes. It was good but not sure it was worth the hour wait. I heard there is also a restaurant location so I would suggest checking that out if you go. It just so happened that there was an International Snow Sculpting Championship going on the week we were there. It was amazing to see the masterpieces they created out of a single huge block of snow. It was totally worth seeing.

On our way back to Denver, we stopped off for a little Breakfast treat for the boys…..The Cereal Box in Arvada, Colorado. Imagine every old school/new school version of cereal plus toppings. A kids Saturday morning dream come true.

A SUGAR High to take us back home to North Carolina……

Tips and Tricks you don’t want to Miss…..

Check the Colorado Chain Law before picking up your rental car. The representative at our rental car place made it sound like were had no choice but to upgrade an extra $200 or be fined. After returning home and reading some forums on Trip Advisor it seems that this might just be a money making ploy. Now I can tell you once we got to the resort area with all of the snow, I am happy that we had the SUV. But I don’t like being taken advantage of and will research this in more detail. I will update this post if I find out something different.

Don’t miss the Holidays in Pinehurst and Southern Pines

img_2651

To a Golfer, it’s a World Class Bucket List stop, but if golf isn’t on your list you may have skipped over this little southern gem as a vacation stop. Imagine the most beautiful manicured greens surrounded by miles of the pine trees–hence the name.  Pinehurst and Southern Pines. As your drive down the road and pass beautiful green pastures some filled with golfers and the others with white fences and elegant horses, you can’t help but feel drawn in to the sights before you. Possibly not as majestic as the mountain range to the west or the beaches to the east in North Carolina -but still absolutely breathtaking. You will want to stop and stare in AWE. Something about it is so Peaceful and Heavenly. Since we were here during December, it is far from its most beautiful. Spring and Summer is EVEN more Amazing.

Pine Needles Golf Course
18th Green of Mid Pine Golf Course – Southern Pines

My family and I have been trying to give experiences rather than the gift of things that will be lost and forgotten. If we do the experience, we will always hold the memory. Since we have two golfers in my household, we decided a trip to Pinehurst and Southern Pines would be perfect.

Pine Needles Golf Club

But this left me wondering what in the world there would be for me to do while they played golf! Lots!!

First Stop Southern Pines………

As my boys hit the course for their round of golf, I headed down to Board street in Southern Pines. It’s a cute little street with old school charm. Antique stores, a charming bookstore, a Cheese store called Southen Whey (so cute), a Wine Cellar, boutiques, gift shops and restaurants. It was all decorated for Christmas with lights and trees. Everyone was so festive and after a while, I NEEDED to stop off for an egg nog at Chapman’s Food and Spirits.

Around the corner is one of my son’s favorite places to eat – Sweet Basil.  They have great sandwiches and they even leave simple syrup on the tables in case your Sweet Tea needs to be even sweeter!  Can you see the pattern here?

This is about the only kind of White Christmas we can have here!

Next Stop, Pinehurst

If you haven’t been to Pinehurst, one of the first things you need to be sure to add to your list is the Pinehurst Resort.  One of the Historic Hotels of America built in 1895. It’s southern charm and character will draw you in the minute you walk in. Full of pictures, memories of some of golf’s greatest legends, along with many other famous historic people through the years such as, Anne Oakley and Amelia Earhart who once graced its doors. The walls tell a story worth checking out. When we arrived it was all decorated for Christmas, with Christmas Goodies, hot cider, horse-drawn carriage rides, gingerbread house displays, and ice skating. It was very easy to get into the Christmas Spirit. What a beautiful memory to share with the family.

We didn’t have time to get to Pinehurst Village on this visit but it is also a fun little area to check out. Cool restuartants and shops.  I will do a post from there in the future to add to this.

Tips and Tricks……

  • If you aren’t a golfer, Pinehurst and Southern Pines still have something for you. Beauty, Fun, relaxation, good food, shopping, history and southern charm. Don’t miss it!
  •  If you are a golfer, you will be in Heaven! No need to say more!
  • Don’t miss the Pinehurst Resort anytime of the year. But Christmas time is extra special!
  • Walk down Broad Street in Southern Pines.
  • Be sure to visit Pinehurst Village!
  • Make a reservation at Ironwood Cafe for Brunch. You won’t be disappointed.
